Every day, we consciously use activities, lay out and play materials to teach children to take good care of themselves and the world. Playing outside and eating and drinking healthy are part of this.

  • Hygiene

  • Respect and care for nature

  • Climate awareness

  • Sand and water play

  • Healthy eating and drinking

With this building block, children develop or learn:

We play outside every day. Because outside children play in a different way than inside. The experience of space, weather, nature, light and surface is different outside. As a result, children’s play and research differs from what they do inside. Outside there is room for bigger, coarser and faster movements (running, climbing, cycling, sports and games), discovering nature (insects, birds, plants, butterflies, falling leaves) and other elements such as the sun, shade, rain, snow and wind. While playing outside, children learn to use their creativity and develop their imagination. Risky play is an integral part of this outdoor play experience.

Go outside

We eat and drink healthily and pay attention to hygiene. For example, we learn that it is important to wash our hands after going to the toilet and playing outside. We also organise activities such as the 'Taste Safari', where the children are introduced to different types of vegetables in a playful way and learn to appreciate various flavours and textures. At out-of-school care, children learn to deal with successes and disappointments when backyard gardening. Because not every seed grows into a plant. Activities such as a cooking workshop, a day trip with the Nature Bus and the yearly Mud Week are also examples of activities that are part of this building block.

Growing up healthy

At all our locations, we let the children – both young and older - experience nature. By bringing them into contact with natural elements at a young age, they remain more involved with nature when they are older. They become more aware of the environment and learn to treat our earth sustainably. That is why we bring children into contact with nature on a daily basis, suitable to the location. Sometimes there is a nature table in the group, we celebrate a seasonal party, play with sand and water or have a few beautiful plants in the group.

We let children discover the real world in a playful way, by taking realistic representations of nature into account in the available play material, such as booklets with photos of animals. And when crafting, we use natural materials, such as autumn leaves, twigs and shells.

Experience nature, even indoors!

Playing outside helps you relax and process information. It sharpens your senses and resistance. Playing with sand and water and learning more about nature, that's what nature experience is all about. We like to take good care of nature and ourselves. That's why we eat fruit and vegetables in all colours and according to the season, sometimes even from our own vegetable garden. And of course, we go outside every day.
